20110126-2 -  ArcGIS Interoperability with ERDAS 9.3 and earlier versions
January 26, 2011

(Update 26 March 2009) ArcGIS 9.0 interferes with LPS 9.3:

If you install ArcGIS 9.0 after you install LPS 9.3, LPS will not start. The error reads:

"The component registration of LPS appears to have been corrupted by the installation of another software product. Please refer to the LPS release notes for instructions for running the LPS installer to repair this problem."

This error is caused by a check in the GIOController that determines whether GIO is side-by-side registered. It does so by examining the COM registration entries of a number of coclasses listed under HKLM\ERDAS\Shared\\CoClasses. To correct the problem, open this registry text file. Save it with a *.reg file extension and run it.

ERDAS IMAGINE 9.3 and LPS 9.3

ERDAS IMAGINE 9.3 & LPS 9.3 are perfectly compatible with ArcGIS 9.3. However, some users are inadvertently deleting ESRI folders when uninstalling ERDAS IMAGINE 9.2, which then prevents ArcGIS 9.3 from working.

If you uninstall ERDAS IMAGINE 9.2 and then go to the C:/Programs folder and manually delete or empty the contents of the folders that are labeled Leica Geosystems or ERDAS, you may delete a folder that ESRI began installing with ArcGIS 9.3 SP2 or SP3. The folder is C:\Program Files\Leica Geosystems\Shared, which contains the GIO Applications Repair Utility. If it is deleted and you then install IMAGINE 9.3 or LPS 9.3, ArcGIS 9.3 becomes disabled, and either crashes or will not open.

To correct this, insert the ArcGIS 9.3 disk and run Repair. It will replace the critical ESRI-installed folders and files. The critical folder that is repaired/replaced is C:\Program Files\Leica Geosystems\Shared\Bin\NTx86

ERDAS IMAGINE 9.1 (and 9.2)

Extensive care has been taken to ensure that ERDAS IMAGINE 9.1 and ArcGIS can be installed and uninstalled independently of each other on any given computer. Consequently, ERDAS IMAGINE 9.1 can be installed on the same computers as ArcGIS versions 8.3, 9.0, 9.1 or 9.2 pre-release and will not cause conflicts with these versions. ArcGIS 9.2 had not been released at the time of releasing ERDAS IMAGINE 9.1 and consequently it cannot be guaranteed to work, but testing with the pre-release indicates good potential. Please refer to the LPS System Specifications for limitations which might occur between installations of LPS 9.1 and ArcGIS.

ERDAS IMAGINE 9.0

Upgrading your ArcGIS 9.1/IMAGINE 9.0 system

We recommend if you are upgrading your ArcGIS 9/IMAGINE 8.7 system, to a new version of ArcGIS 9 and IMAGINE 9.0, that you do a complete uninstall of both sets of software. This procedure will insure that the registry is set up properly and software runs as expected.

Upgrade or Uninstall/Install ArcGIS 9.1 and IMAGINE 9.0 only

Step 1. Uninstall

  • If this is a new installation proceed to step 2. If you are going to uninstall ArcGIS 9.0/9.1 to upgrade or you need to uninstall for any other reason, please follow this uninstall order to avoid registry problems.
  • Go to Start/Programs/Leica Geosystems GIS & Mapping/Fix Manager. Uninstall all loaded fixes. Start at the top of the list and remove. The program will not allow you to uninstall anything out of order.
  • Uninstall IMAGINE 8.7
  • Uninstall ArcGIS Extensions (if you have them)
  • Uninstall ArcGIS 9.0
  • Using Microsoft explorer browse to the directory where you stored your programs. Remove any folders containing ESRI, ArcGIS, and Imagine87. Then browse to your user directory and remove the folder called .87imagine.

Step 2. Installation

  • Load ArcGIS 9.1 and ArcGIS 9.1 SP1
  • Load IMAGINE 9.0
  • If you plan to have IMAGINE 8.7 on your system install it now and IMAGINE SP2 and the performance fix for IMAGINE SP2 from the Support Website.
  • Load ArcGIS 9.1 Extensions (if you have them)

Step 3. Install the Geographic Imaging Objects (GIO) Application Repair Utility

This Fix Utility will repair most problems encountered when installing IMAGINE/LPS Service Packs, ArcGIS service packs and Leica ArcGIS Extensions. Once installed, you will find the program here: Start/Programs/Leica Geosystems GIS & Mapping/Fix Utility

Upgrade or Uninstall/Install ArcGIS 9.1, IMAGINE 9.0 and LPS 9.0

Step 1. Uninstall

  • If this is a new installation proceed to step 2. If you are going to uninstall ArcGIS 9.0 to upgrade or you need to do a complete uninstall for any other reason, please follow this uninstall order to avoid registry problems.
  • Go to Start/Programs/Leica Geosystems GIS & Mapping/Fix Manager. Uninstall all loaded fixes. Start at the top of the list and remove each listed fix. The program will not allow you to uninstall anything out of order.
  • Uninstall IMAGINE 8.7
  • Uninstall LPS 8.7
  • Uninstall ArcGIS Extensions (if you have them)
  • Uninstall ArcGIS 9
  • Using Microsoft explorer browse to the directory where you stored your programs. Remove any folders containing ESRI, ArcGIS, and Imagine87. Then browse to your user directory and remove the folder called .87imagine.

Step 2. ArcGIS 9.1 Installation and IMAGINE/LPS 9.0

  • Load ArcGIS 9.1
  • Load ArcGIS 9.1 SP1
  • Load IMAGINE 9.0
  • Load LPS 9.0
  • Load ArcGIS 9.1 Extensions (if you have them)

NOTE: If you plan to use IMAGINE 8.7 on the same system with IMAGINE 9.0, there is no problem with this and your IMAGINE 9.0 license will run IMAGINE 8.7. However, you CANNOT run LPS 8.7 on the same system with LPS 9.0. You can run LPS 8.7 on a different system that is set up as client pointed to the IMAGINE 9.0 license. Or if you have a nodelocked system then we can provide you with an additional nodelocked license that will allow you to run LPS 8.7 on a different system.

Step 3. Install the Geographic Imaging Objects (GIO) Application Repair Utility

This Fix Utility will repair most problems encountered when installing IMAGINE/LPS Service Packs, ArcGIS service packs and Leica ArcGIS Extensions. Once installed, you will find the program here: Start/Programs/Leica Geosystems GIS & Mapping/Fix Utility
