20110406-4 -  Installation Problems with Error 193 or 8dot3
April 06, 2011

Error 193 and 8dot3 Conditions

The 8dot3 Condition and Error 193 are related conditions that occur while installing ERDAS Desktop products on specific computer systems.

  • Before Installation, installers prevent installation if they detect that a specific security setting might cause installation errors or problems in ERDAS IMAGINE modules.
  • At the end of Installation, installers may display Error 193 if the problem with 8dot3 file names has not been resolved. In recent versions, the problem happens the second time you run an installer. For instance, LPS may install without incident, but then Error 193 appears at the end of the ERDAS IMAGINE installation process.
  • While running ERDAS IMAGINE, certain third-party modules may not work correctly if the issues during installation have not been addressed.

All of these symptoms stem from the same problem – a specialized registry or group policy setting (NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation) designed to increase the security of the system. While this security setting will not directly interfere with the operation of ERDAS Desktop products, the folders created during installation may prevent certain legacy third-party modules from running correctly.

Resolution Strategies

  1. Determine if you need the 8dot3 security setting. If you are certain you can live without it, you can turn the setting off decisively, using the "Simple Fix for the 8dot3 Warning" below.
  2. Select a strategy for dealing with the setting during installation:
    • Turn the setting off during installation of ERDAS products, and then restore it afterwards. This is not particularly practical, since it requires two reboots.
    • Install ERDAS Desktop products into an installation location that does not include spaces.
    • Create the folders needed for ERDAS Installation with the necessary 8dot3 shortcuts

Simple Fix for 8dot3 warning

If you have received the 8dot3 warning, and the 8dot3 security setting is not important to your environment, you can usually eliminate the warning by:

  • Download the REG file that disables the security setting
  • Double-click on the REG file
  • Reboot the computer

The reboot is necessary for this change to take effect. The .REG file will change the registry, which is enough to bypass the warning in the installer. However, the registry change does not take effect until you reboot. If you install ERDAS software before rebooting, there is a good chance you will encounter Error 193, which takes more effort to resolve.
