20110125-4 -  Removing Java from ERDAS IMAGINE 9.1 and LPS 9.1
January 25, 2011

(Obsolete software version) It has come to our attention that there is concern in some cases about the fact that ERDAS IMAGINE is installing some specific versions of Java in the IMAGINE install tree. It should first be noted that these installations in no way override any installations of Java which may already exist on a machine. These are specific versions of Java which are required by some optional components of IMAGINE. This procedure briefly describes those components and it describes how to make an installation of IMAGINE (and LPS) which removes these Java installations.

IMAGINE uses Java and JavaScript in some cases. The IMAGINE Enterprise Editor is Java based functionality which operates within the Viewer to provide display and topological editing of vectors stored in an Oracle Database. The IMAGINE Enterprise Loader for Shape Files is a Java Application which can load shape files into an Oracle Database. During installation IMAGINE uses a Java application to build the index for the help files. Lastly, the HTML help system uses JavaScript to provide a table of contents, search and indexing.

JavaScript is a native part of most browsers and is not an issue here. However, because Java is not always present on a system and because the functionality has been tested with specific versions of the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) the IMAGINE installer makes installations of the JVMs within the IMAGINE installation folders.

As IMAGINE locates the JVM by first looking in the IMAGINE install tree and then looking at JAVA_HOME it is possible to install IMAGINE and then remove the JVM from the IMAGINE install tree.

Please use the following steps:

1. Install ERDAS IMAGINE (and LPS) plus fixes in the following order:
a. Install ERDAS IMAGINE 9.1
b. Install LPS 9.1 (optional)
c. Install Fix 32815 – 2007.02 update for LPS 9.1 (optional)
d. Install Fix 32748 – 2007.02 update for ERDAS IMAGINE 9.1
e. Install Fix 33285 – Data Exchange fix for 2007.02
f.  Install Fix 33361 – Orthorectification fix for 2007.02

2. Remove $IMAGINE_HOME\jrehome1.3.1 and $IMAGINE_HOME\jrehome1.4.2

3. Reboot

IMAGINE and LPS should now run with the following cautions. You will not be able to rebuild the help index as that utility looks strictly in the IMAGINE install tree for the JVM. However, building the help index is typically a onetime operation run at install time. If you have a JVM installed and the JAVA_HOME environment variable is set then the other components in IMAGINE will be able to find and use that JVM.

NOTE: IMAGINE Enterprise Editor has been found to have issues on some machine with Version 1.5 of Java; likewise the Shape file loader has been found to have issues on some machines with Versions 1.4 of Java. If you are not using these features then there should be no problems.
